Overview
You don't have to be a martial arts master here, but it helps! The only way you're going to be able to fight back against some seriously kick-ass Asian food, many give in to Master Kong's legendary eats.
Whether you're black belt, blue belt or none of the above, you're always welcome at Master Kong. A little corner of Mount Maunganui that has completely transformed into an authentic Asian street food stall, Master Kong dazzles with the brilliance of Shinjuku and Hoi An with dozens of coloured lanterns, umbrellas and funky bulbs. And if that wasn't show-stopping enough, their bar is backlit a brilliant lilac colour, hyper-detailed wall art celebrates the quirky sides of Asian culture, and the bamboo bar could easily be on the beach!
Such a dynamic setting deserves equally dynamic food, and Mr Kong's menu doesn't disappoint. High kick the evening into action with some bao buns, keeping it varied with pulled pork, kaarage chicken and marinated jackfruit fillings. Add on some dumplings whilst you're at it; the prawn and ginger ones are absolutely to die for.
Then we get to the big plates, which are rightfully called the Grand Masters. They certainly live up to their mighty name with plates like wagyu short ribs, yellow coconut curry and Peking duck. As for the specialties, we're not defending ourselves against a pad Thai, ramen or teriyaki salmon; indeed, we welcome it!
