Nestled in the heart of Wellington, The Cambridge Hotel is a true icon of the city standing tall since 1883. With its intriguing past heralding an air of mystery, this charming establishment has become a beloved destination for those who love good honest Kiwi food, with a touch of history. Join us as we explore the allure of the Cambridge Hotel.

Just a few minutes stroll away from Te Papa, the Waterfront, and Courtenay Place, The Cambridge Hotel has witnessed the vibrant transformation of the city into the bustling metropolis it is today.

The original timber Cambridge Hotel was constructed on the site between 1873 and 1881, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the harbour and city from its balconies. Its ground floor featured public and private bars, sitting rooms, a dining room, a billiard room, a kitchen, and a scullery, while the upper floor housed comfortable bedrooms and sitting rooms.

In 1929, the present-day hotel, designed for J. Staples and Co. Ltd., founders of the Staples Brewery, was built and completed in 1930. Initially leased, the hotel was later purchased by New Zealand Breweries in 1937 and managed by the company until its sale to private interests in 1996. The building was designed by prominent Wellington architect John Sydney Swan and is one of the few surviving corner-site hotel/public houses that were once a common feature of many New Zealand towns and cities.

Although the original Cambridge Terrace frontage of the hotel once incorporated seven retail shops, little evidence remains of their existence today. The removal of these shops in 1967 coincided with the conversion of the space into a Club Bar, marking the end of the six o'clock closing period.

Over time, the hotel has undergone modifications to adapt to evolving drinking trends and cultural shifts. Bar areas were updated in 1972 and 1974 to meet changing expectations, including the addition of women's toilets, a feature absent from the original designs!

The Cambridge Hotel has gained notoriety for its ghostly encounters, with whispers of mysterious footsteps and faint laughter intriguing visitors for years. Whether you are a believer in the supernatural or not, these haunting tales add an extra layer of intrigue.

Stepping into The Cambridge Hotel is like journeying into a bygone era, where elegance seamlessly blends with a relaxed ambience. The interior exudes warmth and character, adorned with vintage touches that pay homage to its historic roots.

The restaurant offers a welcoming and intimate space to connect with loved ones over a memorable meal. Led by a team of talented chefs, you'll find a gastro-pub menu featuring hearty and great-value meals inspired by local produce and global flavours.

For those seeking a truly unique experience in Wellington, The Cambridge Hotel delivers on all fronts. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a food lover, or simply in search of a memorable night out, The Cambridge Hotel promises an enchanting journey for all who visit.
