Deep in the heart of Mount Eden, 1982 Xinjiang Rice Noodles brings the flavours of Xinjiang closer to home. This Dominion Road eatery is the ultimate group-pleaser, this spot is best visited with a troop of foodie friends ready to indulge.
Start with the signature Stinky Sauce on fried tofu, guaranteed to pair perfectly with an obliging glass of milk. The crunchy and delicate takoyaki balls prove an irresistible option too, while the beef and beef tripe duo is slathered in a tasty, tangy sauce.
You'll be left mouth agape by the mixed rice noodle dishes. Choose between beef or chicken, or go for the option with every option: vegetables, beef, and chicken. All are served ‘dry’ where the dressing coating them clings to every square millimetre. First, though, slurp up some of the moreish soup with boiled or fresh dumplings – or cheat a little by diving into the fried pork strips.
Don’t be fooled though, this is serious dining for those in the know with homemade noodles and mouthwatering food stealing the stage.
Making it to the desserts is essential for fans of honey sesame balls, while the fried kumara chips arguably steal the show for their fruitier, sweeter friends. There is a huge choice of yogurty drinks to fall into alongside Xianjiang-style fruit teas.
