Otāutahi’s very own Māori infused kai with a twist. A stylish little bar and eatery located in the heart of the CBD connecting people of all ages, beliefs and culture.
Lu-Lu’s Bar and Eatery opened in November 2018 after Keith Heather (Pakeha/Christchurch) and Louise Waho (Atihaunui-A-Paparangi, Nga Puhi, Waikato, Morehu) were approached to bring to life this little but stylish bar. Everything and everyone has a whakapapa or a story. Lu-Lu’s story is linked to a little place in Newtown a suburb in Sydney called “The Batch”. Louise and Keith met the owner who was from the same Iwi as Louise. This place brought a bit of home to Sydney in the form of kai (food) that they knew and loved.
The Batch was small but full of beautiful smells and flavours, laughter and beautiful vibes. Keith and Louise saw an opportunity to create a similar place in Otautahi. A space that supports whanaungatanga (building relationships with others), the opportunity to connect or reconnect with people over beautiful Māori infused kai but most importantly allowing people to create their own story here.
Some of our recipes belonged to people from our whānau and community like Aunty Tau’s fry bread or Nan’s steam pudding. Ask us about offsite catering.
Lu-Lu’s supports the community: Our art work you see are all available to purchase, all money goes back to the artist, “canvas” Madia Purvis-Manihera (Ngai Tahu, Tuhoe, Rarotongan)
Bringing people together with Māori fusion food and catchy tunes, Lu Lu's is one of the funkiest eateries in Christchurch!
By day it's low key and chilled but as soon as the evening hits, the dance floor comes alive, the neon lights light up and feet start tapping! Cue a list of retro vibes and old skool tunes that remind us of the days past. It's a joyful mash-up of colour, music, good vibes, great food and liquid fun. That's Friday or Sat night sorted! Feel free to check out some of the local artwork on display too... Christchurch has some budding artists in its midst.
Inspired by community, the menu supports local farm produce from as far as the Chatham Island. From the sea, they have all kinds of culinary delights, like their famous seafood basket and miti platters and their own take on the classic fish and chips. From the land comes some real comforting soul food. Choose from the pork and watercress croquettes, rib eye steak, Lu Lu's ribs and poaka kunekune - a delicately smoked pork belly that comes with a refreshing watercress salad.
And although you might be wrestling with a food coma, you'll still leave this eatery with a spring in your step!
