Reimagining Indian food in the modern world, 1947 is turning tradition on its head for one of the most spectacular dining experiences in Auckland.
Headed by Chef Jaspal Singh, his love and passion for Indian cuisine has driven this unique menu mixing street vendor classics with contemporary cooking methods. The design of the restaurant itself hints at its forward-thinking ethos. A large, communal space is given a distinctly urban feel with metal-heavy elements and hard textures, only to be softened by bountiful bouquets of flowers that hang elegantly from the ceiling. Just like the food, two worlds meet to create something really special.
So, what does this culinary miracle look like? First, let's start with the small dishes which tickle the tastebuds with goodies like spiced lamb served with toasted butter beans, spiced soft-shell crab with curried coconut sauce and deep-fried chicken in a soy sauce and chilli dressing. This is Indian food like you've never tasted before.
At the heart of the mains is the tandoor where you'll find the likes of salmon, chicken, lamb chops and paneer, all cooked to smoky perfection and served with a variety of pastes, sauces, chutneys and salads. As for curries, you'll find the beloved butter chicken, as well as a goat curry rich with fresh spices, a lamb pepper fry that is just as fiery as it sounds and a spicy eggplant dish that is soft, crispy and moreish in equal measure. Pair your dish with any of their fresh bread or rice, and indulge in Areeb's vision of modern India.
